Cemetery Chaplains & Ministers

A total of 16 Church of England clergymen performed the duties of cemetery chaplain during the lifetime of York Public Cemetery Company (1837-1968). They undertook burial services for those who had no allegiance to a parish church or even the established church. There was also an ad hoc arrangement to provide a minister for dissenters. Between them the chaplains officiated at 52,239 funerals, 44% of the total performed in the cemetery.

At first the chaplains were paid 2s 0d per interment (Dissenting Ministers received 1s 6d) but on the appointment of HV Palmer in 1864 the fees were commuted into an annual salary of £90 (plus the washing of surplices). The fee for Dissenting Ministers was raised at the same time to 2s 0d per interment. By the time of Palmer’s death in 1877 his salary had been increased to £100. It remained at this level until the Cemetery Company went into voluntary liquidation and the post was abolished.

In 1919 the chaplain received a special gratutity of £25 to cover the extra work occasioned by the flu pandemic in that year.

* Although JEM Young and JM Brown were not cemetery chaplains they undertook the duties on many occasions on behalf of their superior at St Saviours church. Between them the three of them performed 10059 funerals, an average of 457.33 a year.
